Frequently asked questions

How frequently will the platform content be refreshed?

Minoro’s content will be regularly updated ensuring that you have the most relevant guidance for your region. We welcome any comments on new sources of relevant guidance through the feedback tab accessible within the platform.

Why are some regions not included in Minoro?

The platform will be expanded to include new regions and countries particularly from the Global South. We would welcome input from you on the guidance as we believe the actions are generic wherever your project is. Please use the feedback tab within the the platform to provide your suggestion.

Why aren't all US states, Canadian provinces and European countries listed in the resource section?

To utilise the limited resources available to the development team we chose to focus on the top five states and countries in these regions according to their GDP. Other states and countries will be added to these regions in future updates to the platform.

What procurement route has Minoro assumed when assigning actions to the work stages?

Assumed route reflected in the platform is based on a 2 stage Design & Build with the tender/bidding process commencing at the end of stage 3 and the main contractor taking responsibility for the completion of the work stage 4 design. This is reflected in the sequencing of the procurement related actions – identifiable using the procurement filter. The ownership and timing of these actions can be customised in the carbon management tracker – contained within the carbon management toolkit – to reflect your project’s own procurement route.

What building typologies / asset classes does Minoro cover?

The platform is relevant to all building typologies, whether comprising of exclusively new-build, adaptive re-use and expansion of existing assets, or a combination thereof. Guidance and external resources specific to improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings is covered under work stage 7 [in-use].

Is Minoro a certification tool?

Minoro is not a certification tool for carbon management or net zero carbon but it does provide guidance and link to resources to measure and verify against available certification tools.

How is Minoro different from other carbon calculators and everything else that is out there?

Minoro is not a carbon calculator, it is not a repository for data to be uploaded and downloaded, and it is not an assessment tool.

Is Minoro free?

Yes, using Minoro is free and you don’t need to register, only if wish to receive updates from Minoro when new information is published on the platform. Our objective is to reduce as many barriers as possible in making Minoro accessible for all.

What does Minoro mean?

Minoro is the Latin word to reduce. Given today’s climate emergency and the need to reduce carbon emissions in the built environment it seemed apt.

How did Minoro come about?

Grimshaw developed a decarbonisation pathway specifically to identify the key actions architects and designers either lead or support. As a result of trialling its use on projects and achieving whole life carbon reductions we decided to share it. However, after a global consultation to find out if sharing would be worthwhile, we broadened, through workshops supported by organisations such as RIBA and Green Building Council of Australia, its scope and content to cover the whole construction value chain.

Are there plans for other pathways to be added?

Grimshaw developed pathways for other aspects of the built environment including infrastructure and industrial design. If Minoro’s format gains industry acceptance other pathways will be published.
